APPRECIATION OF SERVICES

OF SERGEANT KARUNA PREMALAL W. A.

It is my pleasure to write this article to appreciate the services of a talented person who created the Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association New Zealand ( S L E S A N Z) logo, flag, letterhead and T-shirt within a very short period of time prior to the SLESANZ 10th Anniversary.
I came to know Sergeant (Sgt) Karuna Premalal when he was a clerk attached to the Regimental Centre of Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps in Panagoda of which I was then the Centre Commandant. Apart from his normal duties as a soldier, the Regimental Centre used his multi-talented skills in photography, music, and media art work at the Publication Section to provide a better service for Ordnance personnel deployed throughout Sri Lanka.
Sgt Karuna Premalal joined the Sri Lanka Army in 1986 after his secondary education at Sadalankawa Central College. He was trained at the Army training Centre Ampara. Soon after training he was deployed in operational duties in Pulikunawa in the Eastern Province, until he was permanently posted to the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps in 1987.
Sgt Karuna Premalal is talented in all fields of the Arts. He won first place in the open painting competition to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Sri Lanka Army. He is a talented sculptor too.  He is also a singer and a song writer who has released a few albums which became quite popular during that time. Further, he was a regular singer in the Ordnance Corps beat group; he took part in Rupavahini programmes, Sirasa Kadamandiya and several other musical shows. His talents also extend into the field of drama which enabled him to be an actor in Mr Jayalath Manoratna’s ‘Ransirige Sangramaya’.
After leaving the Sri Lanka Army he went on to work as a civilian in the Qatar Armed Forces. He currently works there as a photographer/videographer.
Although not based in New Zealand, he supported the goal of SLESANZ and stepped up to create the association’s branding, prior to the 10th anniversary celebrations. We appreciate all the hard work he put into creating the excellent high-quality branding for our organisation.
I wish him all the best.

Col (Rtd) Hemal Mendis
